So the case of Weiner’s wiener is solved. I couldn’t resist the pun. And regardless what you think of the man we now know more about someone than we ever cared to know. And that’s how it goes in today’s society. One misstep one viral video later and a million Google searches later and everything is known and paraded in front of you from every direction. I’m not saying Weiner didn’t deserve the treatment he got. At the very least these new batch of politicians might just want to look into high priced escorts if they’re going to cheat on their wives. It will save a few text messaging embarrassments. They could always just not get married if they still plan on cheating. In a matter of a week everyone across the country knows everything about this fairly inconsequential young congressman. And that’s how the news moves it crams a light in every corner of your life and devours what it can get its hands on.
So this is the future of journalism; or at least journalism in the world of the internet. Things have changed and what I really hope begins to change is what people except from their politicians. In the next ten to fifteen years there will be at least a few Senators with sex tapes. It will be par for the course if you are running for Congress to have that leaked out. And jump twenty-five years into the future with the Face book and YouTube generation you don’t think we will have a President with at leaked picture of their most private areas. It will be drudged up by an old boyfriend or girlfriend to be posted for everyone to see. And you know what; I’m okay with that. Maybe as whole this country will stop getting hung up on frankly bullshit issues. What people do in their private lives outside of murdering people really shouldn’t have anything to do with there electability. That’s why this country keeps electing safe status quo members of Congress. They don’t want to rock the boat and actually create change they’re too worried about the foot fetish getting out.
And this is where I have faith in the youth. As the internet grows older and us with it we will no longer be shocked by silly idiotic pictures from our youth. If everyone is doing it there will be no shame. The shame will come from not having a Face book page while you were young. The standard will flip. We will expect the President to have had made some mistakes. And that might be the best thing that could happen to this country. Because once we stop focusing on every detail of there rocky marriage or their sex life we might just have to judge them on what they actually do. And that is something to be quite excited about. That one day a politician might be accountable for his voting record. That thought gets me so excited that I almost feel the need to take a picture of it.
